Cowichan Valley Car Picnic

The 22nd Annual Cowichan Valley Car Picnic

Selected Prize Winners

August 12, 2007

Despite unpredictable changes of weather and several other local car shows on the Island, about 110 “interesting” collector and classic cars turned out for Sunday’s annual cruise through the Cowichan Valley and picnic on the grass at Brentwood College in Mill Bay.  Our convoy got rained on while driving through Glenora, other participants got rained on en route to Mill Bay, and we all got rained on a couple of times at the event, but people stuck it out in true car picnic style, rolled their windows shut, put their convertible tops up, and slipped their lunches under cover.  When the showers passed, they wiped off the water spots and continued with the show.

This year’s People’s Choice Award went to a very impressive 1926 Locomobile Super 8 phaeton belonging to David Long of Cowichan Station.  Other entries ranged in size from a 2000 Lincoln Town Car Limousine owned by Mill Bay’s Douglas McLean to a child-size electric 1949 Land Rover built by Dr. David Stronge of Lantzville, and in vintage from three vehicles built in 1926 – the Locomobile, Dave Roger’s Oakland 4-Door Landau from Sidney, and Ollie Hodges’ Essex street rod from Cobble Hill – to a pair of red 2006 Mazda MX-5 (Miata) roadsters, one belonging to Cornel Olauson of Victoria, and the other to Bram and Marijke Oudshoorn of Nanoose Bay.

For a second time, the award for the Best Picnic presentation went to Becky Rogers of Sidney for her 1971 Chevy Nova and vintage teardrop trailer combo, which side-by-side with her husband Dave’s 1926 Oakland, was arranged as Mr. and Mrs. Ted E. Bears’ 25th Anniversary Picnic, complete with a visitors’ book for guests to sign.
